Thread ceremony – Mundan / Munja / Upanayan Sanskar is a Hindu traditional ceremony which marks the begining of the brahmacharya phase in the life of a child at the age of eight years. Brahmacharya is a lifestyle characterized by complete abstinence and fully focusing on gaining knowledge.
During this ceremony, the child receives a sacred thread called Yajñopaveetam that he wears. This ceremony announces that the child had entered into formal education. And the Gayatri Mantra is taught to the child.
During olden times, the child used to leave parents home to go and stay in the forest with the Guru or Acharya to receive education i.e. Vidyarambha.
Therefore during this ceremony, the parents and relatives shower the child with appropriate Bhiksha which will be useful for him in his student journey.
